VOLTA Football is a brand new suit of street football game modes in FIFA 20. It’s essentially a next-gen, more realistic version of FIFA Street where players build their own character, express their individual style, and immerse themselves in a realistic street football experience. We’re going to fill you in on all the VOLTA Game Modes and Features coming to FIFA 20.

New tools that come hand-in-hand with VOLTA include simplified flicks and skill moves, new flair animations, and using the wall as a teammate.

Aaron McHardy, Executive Producer for EA SPORTS FIFA describes it like this:

“This year, we are embedding a whole new experience with VOLTA Football into the game that reflects how many footballers started out their careers in the streets. This is a unique aspect of the sport that gives our players an experience unlike anything they have ever seen before in EA SPORTS FIFA.

We’ve also focused on delivering key gameplay updates that raise the level of realism and quality across the game. And with small sided football ingrained in FIFA 20, players can take the learnings from the streets and apply them to the stadium or vice versa.”

“Volta” means “return” in Portuguese, and in VOLTA Football the beautiful game returns to its humble origins.

FIFA 20 VOLTA Gameplay

What are the Rules in VOLTA Football?

There a 6 rule sets in VOLTA Football:

There are also different sizes of pitches, arenas and other playing environments where you can play with or without walls. For example, an underpass in Amsterdam, a neighbourhood cage in London and a Tokyo rooftop.

Different players will suit different rules and environments so you’ll have to choose your team wisely going into games.

What game modes are there in VOLTA?

There are four game modes in VOLTA straight off the bat:

  • VOLTA WORLD
  • VOLTA STORY Mode
  • VOLTA LEAGUE
  • VOLTA KICK-OFF

VOLTA World

VOLTA World Mode

VOLTA World is a game mode where you’ll challenge community generated squads (not unlike Squad Battles), from around the world and steal players from opposing teams to build your own squad.

At the start of VOLTA World mode you get to set up your player (male or female) and customise their appearance with tattoos, clothes and footwear that you can unlock using the game’s new currency “VOLTA Coins” obtained from completing challenges.

Next, you’ll build and customise your home ground with your own logo and your own rules. Choose your rules carefully. Once you get a feel for the game and learn your strengths you’ll want to choose rules that suit the way you play to try to make your home ground a fortress.

Then you’ll build your team to compete in competitions against more teams from various locations around the world. Fixture can be home or away and each match uses the home team’s rules (hence choose yours carefully to gain home advantage).

Choose the players from your squad carefully too as different players will have different strengths and weaknesses depending on what rules you’re playing.

If you win you get to ‘steal’ one of your opponents players enabling you to build and improve your squad. You can even steal your opponent’s avatar if you want.

When you steal a player you steal a snapshot of that player. Only your own character will continue to evolve encouraging you to compete in harder competitions to obtain better players for your squad.

Don’t worry about losing players though, the players stolen are duplicated in the winners squad so if you lose, you won’t lose the stolen players from your squad.

VOLTA Story Mode

FIFA 20 VOLTA Story Mode

In VOLTA Story Mode you take your custom character on a journey around the world facing off against legends of the sport. If you’re good enough you’ll eventually reach the VOLTA World Championships in Buenos Aires.

With VOLTA replacing The Journey in FIFA 20 we think that Story Mode will be a similar adventure to the ones we’re used to seeing Alex Hunter embark on but this time you’ll travel through the street football capitals of the world against some of the world’s best players that started plying their trade on the streets.

We’ll bring you more information as it’s released.

VOLTA League

VOLTA League lets you take your team online in player vs player league with divisions, promotion and relegation.

VOLTA Kick-Off

In VOLTA Kick-Off mode you use real world players from real world teams to play in Exhibition matches.

For example you could choose Neymar, Mbappe and Verratti to take on Ramos, Hazard and Modric in a PSG v Real Madrid 3v3 match.

Team Chemistry in VOLTA

There’s a team management aspect to VOLTA. Choosing which player to take from your opponents team might be influenced by who’ll flourish in the types of fixtures you’ve got coming up,  3v3, 5v5 or futsal etc.

In an interview with EuroGamer, FIFA 20’s Creative Director, Matt Prior and Lead Volta Producer, Jeff Antwi, let slip that there’ll be a rudimentary chemistry element in VOLTA which will add another dimension to choosing players for your squad.

When deciding who to steal from your opponent there’ll be the need to consider if he/she fits in with the dynamic of the rest of your team so it won’t be as straight forward as just choosing the highest rated player.

EA haven’t divulged exactly what this layer of team chemistry will be but we’ll have more on this as it’s released.)

Player Development and Customisation

FIFA 20 VOLTA Player Customisation

Player development and customisation features heavily in VOLTA. They’re the two strands to developing the way your player looks and plays on the pitch.

VOLTA Player Development

You develop your player though playing games and through completing training exercises. Each of these will develop your players attributes in different ways making him/her better and able to challenge at a higher level.

There’s also an ‘Attribute Tree’ much like in Pro Clubs where you can unlock and choose different traits to develop your player into a certain archtype.

VOLTA Player Customisation

‘Vanity Items’ can be unlocked using VOLTA Coins and completing in game challenges. So far the Vanity Items consist of:

  • Hairstyles
  • Tattoos
  • Clothing
  • Footwear
  • Celebration Emotes

Will there be micro-transactions in VOLTA?

No, there won’t be any micro-transactions in VOLTA. Unlocking vanity items and upgrading players will be done through game play and challenges.

Much like the Daily and Weekly Objectives in FUT, new sets of challenges will appear each month and the items in these challenges will be exclusive to each month.

There is a new currency, VOLTA Coins, which will enable you to buy items and customise your player but this will be earned through grinding gameplay and won’t be obtained through micro-transactions.

EA haven’t ruled out micro-transactions being added in the future but have confirmed that there won’t be any at launch.

VOLTA Game Modes and Features in FIFA 20

Can you play VOLTA with friends?

Yes and no. You can play co-op as long as your friend is sitting next to you on the same console but there’ll be no online co-op or pro clubs features in the VOLTA mode when it’s first released with FIFA 20.  You can play against other players online but each player will control one full team.

It doesn’t look like this will always be the case though. When VOLTA was announced the FIFA community were extremely vocal that EA had missed a trick by keeping the mode 1v1. EA SPORTS response was that it’s always looking to improve the mode and that hopefully the ability to play online in the same team as your friends will be added further down the line.

EA Sports on team play in VOLTA:

“We couldn’t fit that in at the first launch. It is something that we’re aware of, it is something we’re looking to bring in the future but it’s not something we have the opportunity to do right now.”

We’ll bring you more FIFA 20 VOLTA Football information as it becomes available.
