Hello all, and welcome back to UltimateFIFA, I’m going to start this topic with a brief bit of information on myself, as this is my first piece for UltimateFIFA.

My name is James Mountford, I’m 20 years old and a massive football fan. Since I have known what football is, I have supported Manchester United, and having grown up with my old man being a big Huddersfield Town supporter, I have slowly over time become a huge Town fan too!

I have been playing FIFA since FIFA99, although I was only 9 so I have only been playing properly since about FIFA03. I mostly play FIFA Clubs when I play FIFA now, and have played for some top quality clubs both on Playstation and XBOX; I am formerly a ‘Senior Moderator’ alongside my friends at FVPA as well!

I’m very opinionated, however I’m always willing to listen to people’s opinions, but similarly to Mr Clough, I will probably still decide that I was right all along!

If anyone has any more questions or feedback, about my posts or about me personally, please feel free to follow and tweet me on @JMountford3.

Anyway, down to the good stuff!

In A FIFA, Far, Far Away

So every year, FIFA fans all over the planet spend 2 or 3 months of the year just gagging for Romily Broad or David Rutter to release information about the latest FIFA, and to their credit, whilst I believe they have got a few ‘upgrades’ wrong, in the most part, they have done phenomenally (took a few attempts at spelling that to get it right) well, having completely eclipsed (in my opinion) the Pro Evolution series, which I think was a stronger game in Pro 4 and Pro 5.

We have seen some massive updates to the game, not only in the graphics department, but most importantly in the game play, with Virtual Pro’s being introduced in FIFA 10, and many important variations of how to play the game being brought in for those hardcore FIFA fans to master.

FIFA 13 Test Environment

FIFA 13 Test Environment

However, each year I watch Gamescom or E3 on a stream on my computer, and sit patiently waiting for Mr Rutter to briefly stroll on stage and show us some of the latest updates that we can look forward to using a few months down the line before he strolls off again…

And each year it gets me thinking (which can be a dangerous thing to happen a lot of the time), just how far can FIFA go with updates and game changing enhancements on the current game.

For example, in 20 years time as the next generation of FIFA addicts sit and patiently wait for (most likely) the new younger version of David Rutter, will they be waiting and watching on their 3D televisions / computers waiting to see the new Mr Rutter show off FIFA 33’s adaptations on how to play the game, using their full helmet headsets and sticky motion sensors with his treadmill.

As he prepares to show us that in FIFA 33, we will actually PLAY the game ourselves, stood in our living rooms with a small treadmill running along with our players, swinging out our feet to strike that perfect shot past the opposing goalkeeper, whom will be sat somewhere else in the world with a similar device to save the shot!?

Virtual Reality

Or will we be watching near perfect graphics as we play with our resolution enhancing glasses as players storm around the pitch in an angry mood flying into tackles like Karl Henry versus Joey Barton at its most heated, before scoring a Van Persie style volley with the latest overrated English teenage ‘sensation’, who then chooses his own celebration and rips his shirt off before running the full length of the pitch to do the ‘Hulk’ (Balotelli) celebration in front of the fans from his old club in true Adebayor style!?

I personally, think the biggest update possible for this game that will arrive over the next few years has actually been seen by FIFA fans recently in the latest trailer for FIFA13, where we see arguably the greatest player to have ever lived, pick the ball up on the half way line, and begin his dribble.

Many of you will have noticed that during this stage of the trailer we actually see the game through Lionel Messi’s eyes, in a first person view of the game. It is this that I think will slowly be introduced over the next few years, perhaps around the next 5/6 or 7 years. This feature would really change the way FIFA is played, and would especially help and advance the Clubs scene, as each player plays as one player.

First Person FIFA

Endless Possibilities

Having hopefully opened your mind to just a few of the possibilities I personally think FIFA can reach and will reach many years down the line, I asked UltimateFIFA’s own Mr Craig Cole on what he thought!

Coley, I have two questions for you:

1.  Where do you think/would you like FIFA to be in 5 years, regarding the enhancements made on the game and the features introduced to make the game feel that bit more realistic?

“Every year FIFA gets more and more realistic but despite what the purists want EA have still got to appeal to the casual gamer. That’s where they’ll have to strike a balance between arcade and simulation.

That said I can see AI becoming more and more “intelligent” and now that the new big game engines are in place I think EA will concentrate more on the finer, more discreet details that will make the game more realistic.

I think one thing’s for sure; with the new generation of more powerful consoles due out over the next couple of years graphically we’re going to see some leaps forward (again).”

2.  What is the Ultimate ‘development’ if you like, that you can see the FIFA series getting to 10/20/30 years down the line?

“It’s hard to think that far ahead but can you imagine what artificial intelligence will be like then.

Imagine having team-mates and opposition that genuinely learn to play a certain style and adapt to different conditions. That evolve in real time not constrained to pre-programming.

AI that plays with the genuine emotion that footballers play with today, feel pressure, make mistakes and get fired up for big games. That would be pretty cool.”

Thanks for that Cole!

FIFA’s Future – We Want Your Views

We Want You

So there you have UF’s Craig Coles hopes and thoughts for the future of FIFA, I would now appreciate some reader participation, please feel free to leave a comment below about your hopes, ambitions and desires for FIFA and its future, and hopefully if there is enough feedback, I can write a follow up post displaying some of your ideas!

I will also be hounding Mr Rutter and Mr Broad and anyone else I can get within ears reach and hopefully get their ideas on where FIFA will be decades down the line!

Or if you would be happy for FIFA to stay similar to how it is now, with a few changes and improvements to the current systems, such as removing the ability to be superman and fly 30 metres when someone runs into you off the ball, or shooting for the top corner in Clubs and seeing a superman-esc dive across the goal to save everything you strike.

All comments, ideas and views are welcome so don’t hesitate to leave yours! I cannot wait to find out what you think is THE Ultimate FIFA!

Thanks for reading everyone, I hope you’ve liked my post and as stated before, any feedback, ideas for future posts or questions about anything feel free to Tweet me @JMountford3!

James.

Class article man! I like what you’re saying and think you are right in many ways. There will definitely go towards the personalized movement but I really hope they focus on building the game as they have done since Fifa 2003. I was also a HUGE pro fan and didn’t even buy Fifa between 2004 + 07, however after picking up Fifa08 I haven’t gone back and as far as it goes I don’t think I will be anytime soon.

Keep up the good work. Ledge!

Decent write up fella. Always imagined FIFA would be the same in years to come, where you have to run yourself, so your stamina in real life is in affect on the game, how possible that is we will find out hopefully.

First person view will be hard, and might not work. NFL games had a first person view and it was horrible, ruined the whole game for me, but I guess if everyone had the same view it would force people to adapt, and might have potential.

Looking forward to FIFA 13 anyway, and a decent in depth write up.

Nice write-up. Agree with most of it.

Ps Im sure u can play clubs from the first person view atm using the pro camera. It’s awful.

yeah, you need some way of looking behind you or being aware of what’s around.

People on Pro camera can’t pass backwards!

(Mind you a lot of people on tele camera can’t either :D)

Agreed. Pro camera is in my opinion the biggest problem with Pro mode, especially when playing online and like you said, people never pass backwards.

The huge challenge for producers going forward will be to get rid of the “arcade” feel of Pro mode and make it feel like virtual reality 360 degrees.

And that’s not going to happen until new hardware is invented.

I like the read, tbh, only things for me as a clubs player is that they need to make sure that 11 man clubs there is benefits to it, and would like to see more custom shit on the game, such as kits/badge etc. Would also like to pick your number when you join the club rather than get it done on your pos, and lastly maybe be able to have custom formations in the match room…

As for the future, don’t think a treadmill would work as the “bigger” kids would have a disadvantage, would probably be strange, one thing they could do, not in twenty years but a lot more, but think i saw it on the simpsons where they put something over their eyes, similar to the thing Cyclops has from x-men, makes you actually in the game from a first person point of view, but will probs never happen :D
