This FIFA 13 heading tutorial breaks winning headers down into 3 steps and also provides a few quick tips that some people might not be aware of.

Winning Headers Step 1: Manouvering Your Player

You need to get your player into the best position to win the header as early as possible. This doesn’t always mean standing under the ball though because sometimes it’s better to get a running jump on your opponent.

If you’re opponent already has a better position and you can’t get past you can hold both triggers to lock off the ball, quickly re-position yourself and then lock back onto the ball in a better position.

Winning Headers Step 2: Jostle

Lean in, push, use both thumbsticks and do everything you can to throw your opponent off, gain an advantage and better position.

You’d be surprised at how many people don’t bother jostle back.

Winning Headers Step 3: Winning The Ball

Time your jump well and think about the direction you’re heading. Keep it simple and you’ll have more chance of winning the header.

It’s difficult to say which direction simple as it’s contextual but head in the direction that seems most physically natural to your player.

Quick Tips

  • For goal kicks and corners, press the change player button straight after the ball’s kicked to get control of the best positioned player as quickly as possible.
  • Heading over the top balls back to your keeper is 100 times more effective than trying to clear the ball.
  • If you’re under pressure head using the shoot button. You’ll give up control over where your header goes but you’ll increase your chances of winning the ball.

Cheers for watching hope it helps and if you’ve got any tips of your own, leave them in the comments and I’ll catch you next time.

What do you mean by holding both triggers? I’m on PS3?

L2 and R2 Jo Jo.  Should lock you off the ball and let you move manually.

I find holding down L2 PS3 or left trigger button for XBox helps win my headers & it also helps me score volleys, scissor & overhead/bicycle kicks, but bear in mind timing as well as positioning is very important!!!

Heading back to the keeper is suicide unless you’re in the box
