Article 2 – Know Your Role

A big welcome to the second article in the PROSPECTIVE series.

If you haven’t read the first article yet you can find it here.

In recent years I’ve been involved with the recruitment of players for a few clubs in the FIFA series. One of my pet hates that has come from this, is the “Harlem Globetrotter“! Yes I know that’s basketball, but for me there’s nothing worse than a player that says he can play any position on the field with equal skill and ability – it’s very rare that this is ever true.

Dedication

Play a position that you enjoy and dedicate yourself to learning that position inside and out. Personally I’m a CDM and I know from experience how to mark players, when to push forward, to keep my passing simple and what skill moves work for me (not many as a CDM, it’s not worth the risk of getting caught out).

I play this position simply because I love it. Breaking up play and starting up an attack from the back gives me more enjoyment than running down the wings, showing flair and putting in crosses, I’m happy to let that be another players passion. I don’t score many goals but the ones I do get seem to be more memorable than your average tap ins, and a last ditch ball winning challenge is my reward most games.

Real Life Pros

If your playing FIFA then I’m pretty much 99% sure your a big football fan. It’s not often you will see a real professional player changing positions. Big money is spent on transfers year in and year out to bring in players that can do a job in a specific area of the pitch.

When was the last time you saw Drogba playing left-back? It’s fine to say you can do a job elsewhere on the pitch but don’t exaggerate your abilities. I wouldn’t know where to start as a goalkeeper or striker but elsewhere in midfield I can put in the effort to help the team out if needed.

If you’ve modeled your pro on the certain build of a player – think, watch and learn how his real life counterpart plays and use this in games. You won’t see Peter Crouch asking for lofted through balls to run onto, he likes it into feet to hold up the play and then to get it out to the wings to get on the end of crosses.

So if your players a lanky 6ft 6 inches don’t ask for those passes in FIFA, you’re not going to get onto them and the chances are if you do bring it down a defender will just hustle you off the ball because your players just too slow with his control.

Enjoy your position, know your role and play to your strengths it’s not just you that’s playing the game, those around you rely on the knowledge that you can do the job asked of you by the club.

Thanks for reading and good luck on the pitch. Feel free to leave any comments and questions.

  3. […] This is an important one. I see plenty of applications that look like this: LW/CAM/RS/CB/CDM/RM/RAM/LB/GK. Ok, you might be able to play all of those positions equally well but a manager’s going to take one look and think this guy can’t make up his mind where he wants to play. Managers will be looking for someone to fill a specific position. They won’t want someone that they think won’t be happy sticking to that position. You’re best putting your favourite position and then maybe two more (back-up) positions that you will be happy filling in for. For example, for me it would be: CAM (CDM/ST). The manager can see straight away the position that I want to play but also see that I’m versatile enough to cover other positions when needed. Clark I HD talks about this in his second Prospective article which you can read here. […]
